Overview

Ella sits at just over a thousand metres, ringed by tea estates that climb the surrounding ridgelines in tidy green rows. It's the easiest hill-country stop to actually slow down in — most people plan one night and end up staying two.

The town itself is small, but it's the base for the island's best short hikes and its most photographed stretch of railway: the Nine Arches Bridge, still crossed daily by the ordinary Kandy–Badulla passenger line.

Things to Do

Hike Little Adam's Peak, an easy 45-minute walk with a big payoff view
Tour a working tea estate and factory, then taste straight off the line
Take the scenic rail onward toward Kandy or back from Nuwara Eliya
