Overview

Founded as a British hill retreat, Nuwara Eliya still carries the look — a Tudor-style post office, a colonial-era racecourse and golf club, and rows of tea bushes climbing every slope around town. The climate is the real draw: this is the coolest air on the island by a wide margin.

It's also the natural gateway to Horton Plains, whose World's End cliff walk is best started at dawn, before the daily mist rolls in and swallows the view.

What travelers say about Nuwara Eliya

"

Genuinely cold at night, which nobody warned us about before — our guider had, thankfully, and we'd packed for it.

"

World's End at dawn was the best hour of the whole itinerary. Glad we didn't sleep in.
