Galle Fort

Overview

Built by the Dutch in 1663 over an earlier Portuguese fort, Galle's ramparts still enclose a living town — not a museum piece. Cobbled lanes hold boutique shops, cafés, and guesthouses inside converted colonial townhouses, all within a UNESCO World Heritage boundary.

The full rampart walk takes about an hour at an easy pace and is best timed for golden hour, when the lighthouse end fills with locals and visitors alike watching the sun drop into the Indian Ocean.

Combine with Mirissa or Unawatuna rather than a same-day round trip from Colombo
